About Our Practice

A Practice Where Patients Feel Known

de Fazio Obstetrics & Gynecology has been caring for women and families for more than 60 years. Founded on clinical excellence, personal attention, and lasting patient relationships, our practice offers comprehensive obstetric and gynecologic care in a comfortable, relaxed office setting.

We believe healthcare should feel personal. New patients meet with their physician in his office before the examination, allowing time for conversation, questions, and a thoughtful review of concerns. After the exam, patients return to the physician's office to discuss findings, next steps, and any questions they may have.

Our team personally reviews test results and discusses abnormalities directly with patients. We are available 365 days a year and provide a 24-hour answering service for patients requiring after-hours medical attention.

Our practice is accredited by the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine and offers in-office gynecologic and obstetric ultrasound, nonstress testing, and laboratory services. Some families have been with our practice for three generations — a reflection of the trust, compassion, and continuity of care that define de Fazio OB/GYN.

Compassionate care. Timeless values. Modern medicine.

Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists · Diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology

For more than three decades, Mark L. de Fazio, MD has been dedicated to providing compassionate, personalized obstetric and gynecologic care to women and families throughout Brooklyn and Staten Island. Combining exceptional clinical expertise with a warm, approachable manner, he has earned the trust of generations of patients who value the relationships built over years—and often decades—of care.

A Brooklyn native, Dr. de Fazio graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Cum Laude from the College of the Holy Cross, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Classics. He received his Doctor of Medicine from SUNY Downstate Medical Center before completing his residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at The Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, where he served as Administrative Chief Resident.

In 1990, he joined the practice founded by his father, Dr. Laurence de Fazio, continuing a family tradition of caring for women that began in 1965. Today, de Fazio Obstetrics & Gynecology remains one of New York City's longest-established private OB/GYN practices and continues to serve many families across multiple generations.

In addition to private practice, he serves as an Attending Physician at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital and as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Weill Cornell Medical College. Deeply committed to medical education, he mentors residents and medical students while remaining actively involved in physician training and continuing education.

His leadership within Brooklyn Methodist Hospital has included service on numerous Medical Board committees and election as President of the Medical Board from 2020 through 2022. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he worked closely with hospital leadership to help guide the institution through one of the most challenging periods in modern healthcare.

Throughout his career, Dr. de Fazio has been recognized for both clinical excellence and community leadership. He has been named a Castle Connolly Top Doctor since 2021 and a New York Top Doctor since 2019, and was inducted into the Healer's Hall of Fame at Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. In 2023, he was honored by the Medical Society of the County of Kings for his outstanding service to the Brooklyn community.

Beyond patient care, he has served as a consultant to pharmaceutical and medical device companies and has lectured nationally on topics including maternal nutrition, nausea and vomiting in pregnancy, and menopause management. He is a past President of the Morgagni Medical Society of New York, currently serves on its Board of Trustees, and continues to chair the Society's Scholarship Committee, helping future physicians pursue medical education. He is also a member of the Medical Society of the State of New York and a Knight of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Most women should have an annual wellness exam. This visit typically includes a physical exam, a breast exam, and a pelvic exam. It is also an opportunity to discuss contraception, menstrual cycles, and any health concerns.

We generally schedule your first prenatal appointment between 8 and 10 weeks after your last menstrual period. However, if you have a history of high-risk pregnancy or are experiencing pain or bleeding, please call us immediately.

Generally, Tylenol (Acetaminophen) is safe for pain, and Tums is safe for heartburn. However, you should avoid ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin) and certain decongestants. Always consult our provided "Safe Medications" list or call the office before taking anything new.

In most cases, yes. Regular physical activity is encouraged. We recommend moderate-intensity exercises like walking, swimming, or prenatal yoga. Avoid contact sports or activities with a high risk of falling.

True labor contractions become stronger, more frequent, and do not go away with rest or hydration. Look for the "5-1-1" rule: contractions occurring every 5 minutes, lasting 1 minute each, for at least 1 hour.

For most low-risk pregnancies, travel is safe until about 36 weeks. If you are flying, we recommend walking the aisles every hour and staying hydrated. Always discuss travel plans with your provider if you are high-risk.

Irregularity can be caused by various factors, including stress, significant weight changes, hormonal imbalances (like PCOS), or thyroid issues. If your cycles are consistently unpredictable, we recommend a consultation.

Common signs include a strong, persistent urge to urinate, a burning sensation when urinating, and cloudy or strong-smelling urine. If you suspect a UTI, contact us for a simple urine test and treatment.

While some discomfort is common, "normal" cramps should be manageable with over-the-counter relief. If pain causes you to miss work or school, or if it is getting worse over time, it could indicate conditions like endometriosis.

Management varies by individual and may include Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), non-hormonal medications, or lifestyle adjustments to address hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness.

If you feel a new, hard, or fixed lump, or notice changes in the skin or nipple, schedule an exam immediately. While many lumps are benign cysts or fibroadenomas, any change should be professionally evaluated.

Yes. While some screenings are standard, we can provide a comprehensive STI panel upon request. Most tests involve a simple blood draw or a vaginal swab.
